Queer Contact Improvisational Dance
Jochen Kleres
Contact Improvisation is a dance form for everyone. There are practically no rules, no steps or figures to learn. Instead you keep physical contact with one another, thereby hearing the body of the other and letting one’s own body find its movements. This way, any movement, no matter how simple, can become a dance.
Contact isn’t about performing or looking pretty. There really is no wrong or right. Instead, it is much more important to find your own way of expressing yourself in movement. Contact can be anything from fun to meditative, it can be sensual, sometimes a mirror of how we act, therapeutic, regenerative, playful, athletic and acrobatic, lazy and much more depending on what is happening between the dance partners developed at the moment.
Our class offers you a guided path to explore these and many other possibilities. For gbtqia men* it offers a safe space to explore physical interaction with others and thus the range of impressions and expressions that can arise from it.
No prior dance experience is required, just a willingness to explore movements. While contact has developed in a largely heteronormative scene since it’s introduction we think it’s time to queer it up!
