Description

Village Book Club – “The Freezer Door”// Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore (2020)

Host: Marco Astolfi

Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore doesn’t like the story imposed on us by mainstream society, because it makes us lonely and sick, alienating us from each other even if we live close together. She wants to tell us another story, a new one which redefines who we are and what we can become.

“The Freezer Door” is a series of short and seemingly unconnected writings (including a ten-page conversation between an ice cube and an ice cube tray), but ultimately it feels like a summation of what it’s like to be alive right now: a meditation on bodies, sex and gender, cities, gentrification and consumerism, queerness and conformity, trauma, loss and loneliness, friendship and connection, pain, pleasure, desire and the yearning for change.

The language is intimate and non-linear. The reader experiences on the page the birth of Sycamore’s thoughts as they happen, as if she were talking to you in an afterhours place or at home, after a night out in the clubs… A book about not belonging that makes you feel less alone.

About the village book club
Book lovers and bookworms have been meeting on a bimonthly basis to discuss works of fiction and non-fiction (novels, biographies, and essays) focused on or related to LGBTQIA+ themes and personalities.

Anticipating insightful discussions, we choose the next book two months in advance.
