Queer Bridges Monday with Aleya

In this class we will explore our range of movement and emotions while learning an easy choreography to an Egyptian song. Baladi (colonially labeled as bellydancing) is one of the oldest documented Performance arts in human history.

Our bodies carry fear, grief, guilt and shame. Baladi is a sure way to allow trapped emotions to move through your body and eventually become released. This class centers queer migrant identities but of course, everyone is more than welcome to join.

Aleya is a traditional Egyptian dancer, actress and writer with a background in theatre, opera, Latin dance and Chinese martial arts. She brings techniques from theatre and internal martial arts into her teaching of Egyptian Baladi choreography, cultivating grounding, agility, presence and joy. Her approach is shaped by a lifelong practice of dance and movement, 22 years of experience in theatre, a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery, and a diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Queer Bridges: Forging connections and providing resources for LGBTQIA+ people with experiences of migration and/or displacement.

Queer people with experiences of migration and/or displacement in Berlin often face unique challenges in their daily lives that can limit their access to supportive communities and inclusive environments.

With the support of the Deutsche Fernsehlotterie Stiftung, we have developed the Queer Bridges program to overcome these barriers. We provide resources, networking and support in a welcoming environment for queer immigrants and refugees through our special program. Our goal is to foster a sense of belonging to the local LGBTQIA+ community, enabling smooth integration and an improved quality of life for queer folks with experiences of migration and/or displacement.
