Description
Village Book Club – "London Triptych" // Jonathan Kemp (2013)
Host: Marco Astolfi
The Victorian London, where male prostitution gives a chance to leave the foul-smelling, poverty stricken neighbourhoods and taste the pleasures of high society just before the scandalous trial of Oscar Wilde will change everything.
The post-war London of the 1950s with its landscape of rubble and bombed buildings, where, in a time of repression and hostility towards homosexuality, it’s better to stay in the closet and sublimate desire.
And the London at the close of the twentieth century, the party capital with its hedonistic club scene, as a place to escape to and reinvent oneself, but where anonymity, invisibility and lack of intimacy threaten to swallow the individual.
The book is available in English and German. The discussion in the evening will be in English (with translation from and to German if necessary). Enjoy reading!
About the village book club
Book lovers and bookworms have been meeting on a bimonthly basis to discuss works of fiction and non-fiction (novels, biographies, and essays) focused on or related to LGBTQIA+ themes and personalities.
Anticipating insightful discussions, we choose the next book two months in advance.
