The Garden
DIrector: Derek Jarman
Drama, 1990, 95 mins
Engl.
Filmed in the stark environs of Derek Jarman’s coastal home in the shadow of Dungeness power station, The Garden is a powerful and moving series of allegorical dreamscapes. Die Erzählung beginnt damit, dass Jarman an seinem Schreibtisch schläft und von christlichen Bildern umgeben ist. His dreams transpose New Testament events into a contemporary context, examining repressive attitudes towards homosexuality, the AIDS crisis and exploring Jarman s own feelings towards the Church. Featuring a brilliant score by Simon Fisher-Turner, The Garden is a visual tour-de-force from the acclaimed director of Sebastiane and Jubilee .
Followed by a short video: Saintmaking: the canonisation of Derek Jarman by queer ‘nuns’
Village.Berlin’s monthly movie night started off as an informal gathering of members to show some of our favourite camp classics. Over the years the program has expanded beyond GBTQ themed films to explore more queer / non-normative point of views in a variety of genres and styles. Following each screening, visitors are welcome to stay and discuss the films and related themes in an informal group setting.
