Contemporary Dance through Latin American and queer perspectives

Queer Bridges Monday with Roque Vargas

This class explores contemporary dance through Latin American influences and queer perspectives, using movement as a way to reconnect with the body, identity, and personal expression. Drawing on contemporary dance practices and ballet foundations, we explore ways of moving beyond habitual patterns and social expectations.

Open to all levels, the class offers a supportive space to explore sensuality, confidence, and curiosity without judgment. Through improvisation, floorwork, technical exercises, and choreography, participants deepen their connection to their physicality and discover authentic forms of expression while celebrating diverse bodies, experiences, and identities.

Roque Roque is a 30-year-old queer Peruvian dancer based in Berlin. Former professional swimmer and member of Peru’s National Water Polo Team, he began circus training in 2011 and professional contemporary dance training in 2012. From 2017 to 2023, he danced with Danza Viva Peru, one of Lima’s leading contemporary dance companies. Since then, he has worked across Europe with companies and artists including Inversedance, DART Dance Company, Ben Rentz Ensemble, Anton Lachky and Jiří Pokorný. As a freelance artist in Berlin, he collaborates across dance, music, fashion, and visual arts.

Queer Bridges: Forging connections and providing resources for LGBTQIA+ people with experiences of migration and/or displacement.

Queer people with experiences of migration and/or displacement in Berlin often face unique challenges in their daily lives that can limit their access to supportive communities and inclusive environments.

With the support of the Deutsche Fernsehlotterie Stiftung, we have developed the Queer Bridges program to overcome these barriers. We provide resources, networking and support in a welcoming environment for queer immigrants and refugees through our special program. Our goal is to foster a sense of belonging to the local LGBTQIA+ community, enabling smooth integration and an improved quality of life for queer folks with experiences of migration and/or displacement.
