Description
Village Book Club in English: “Deep House” by Jeremy Atherton Lin (2025)
Hosted by Marco Astolfi
1996. Jeremy meets the boy of his dreams, a Brit nicknamed Famous, just as the US Congress prepares the Defense of Marriage Act, denying same-sex couples rights including immigration. Since their cross-border relationship is illegal, they have to drop out, hide away, and seek out refuge in unlikely places. The pair snatch time in forests and deserts, London fashion shows, and East Village hotel rooms; eventually, they shack up illicitly in San Francisco.
“Deep House” moves through the couple’s various domiciles, while uncovering the stories of outsiders who preceded them: hapless criminals, seductive bartenders, friars, pirates, maverick government workers and fearless activists, as well as the author’s parents, with their interracial romance. Structured like a mixtape, the book combines cultural history with radically intimate memoir, weaving the author’s decades-long, transnational romance with a larger inquiry into the many ways queer couples lived and loved before gay marriage became legal.
Marco Astolfi is a literary translator, writer and fairy from Italy. He lives in Berlin, is a co-organizer of the Village Heart Circle for GBTQ men and runs the Book Club evening every two months.
