Description
Open Writing Circle
Guest : Hopper Rickard
Hopper presents an alternative to modern narratives about the value and meaning of emotion, and methods for interacting with the self. Participants will be invited to let go of stigmas around their own experience of being, and utilize alternative point of view to evaluate the meaning and value of aspects of their experience which they have been otherwise encouraged to silence.
Specifically, writing a letter to themselves from the first person perspective of an anthropomorphized aspect of self that they have been taught to other or wall off. This can take the form of poetry or pros. It can be five words or five pages. The form itself comes without rule or requirement. Creativity is encouraged. The point is to give voice to what has been silenced within you.
Words and stories reside within all of us, waiting to be discovered.
- Our monthly Open Writing Circle invites people with all levels of writing experience to explore their creativity and imagination.
In each session, one of Berlin’s many exceptional writers, poets, artists, or curators will create a vibrant and collective learning experience. - Whether you’re interested in fiction, memoir, non-fiction, or poetry, this supportive space encourages you to uncover the words within you. We’ll draw upon techniques used in writing workshops to unleash your innate talent in a collaborative environment that will allow for a dynamic exchange of ideas and insights.
- This workshop aims to create an affirming, playful and empowering space for queer people to explore, express and celebrate their identities as well as to provide a platform for the stories of the LGBTQIA+ community to be shared, heard and valued.
Hopper Rickard (Virginia, 1983) is a writer, musician, and spiritual coach who focuses on empowerment through emotional honesty. Her philosophy of “nakedness before the self” invites people to replace shame with curiosity and meet the complexity of the human heart, where real deconstruction begins. Raised in conservative evangelical America, she entered university to become a minister and was recruited into a cult, which she later left by refusing to lie to herself. After isolation, poverty, and homelessness, she rebuilt her life—from journals burned for her beliefs to becoming a VP in news and web tech, and earning a degree in Anarchist Archaeology. Now in Berlin, she helps others find courage and self-truth. Blog: www.formoracle.com
