Description

Open Writing Circle

Guest : Manuel Irmey

Multilingual Writing: Between Languages

In the writing workshop we will engage with different languages we have or have had contact with. Through a range of shorter exercises, we’ll get our writing flowing and try out approaches for how we can play with different languages, their particularities, and their commonalities.

In the second part, each person will have time to work on their own longer text, building on the prompts from the first part. The workshop facilitation offers support on request with questions or blocks. To close, we will come together for a — of course voluntary — reading and feedback round.

Words and stories reside within all of us, waiting to be discovered.

  • Our monthly Open Writing Circle invites people with all levels of writing experience to explore their creativity and imagination.
In each session, one of Berlin’s many exceptional writers, poets, artists, or curators will create a vibrant and collective learning experience.
  • Whether you’re interested in fiction, memoir, non-fiction, or poetry, this supportive space encourages you to uncover the words within you. We’ll draw upon techniques used in writing workshops to unleash your innate talent in a collaborative environment that will allow for a dynamic exchange of ideas and insights.
  • This workshop aims to create an affirming, playful and empowering space for queer people to explore, express and celebrate their identities as well as to provide a platform for the stories of the LGBTQIA+ community to be shared, heard and valued.

Manuel Irmey (no pronouns/they) writes texts between poetry and spoken word, often between different languages (mostly German and English). In these, Manuel addresses, among other things, language itself, identity, and the interpersonal. Recently, Manuel has become interested in zine-making. Manuel facilitates workshops in theatre, creative writing, queerness, and anti-racism. Manuel’s texts have so far appeared in PS – Politisch schreiben, Parabolis Virtualis, and Glitter. Manuel is a member of the poetry collective das ad hoc; in 2025 they co-curated the reading series “textOUR,” and from the end of 2026 they will co-curate the series “Bitte -setzen. Texte in 4D”.
