This meeting gives queer artists and cultural practitioners with and without refugee and migration experience, representatives from art and higher education institutions and other actors of the Berlin cultural scene the opportunity to make contacts in an informal setting to exchange ideas, stories and experiences.

Intersections of Identity

Navigating Gender, Transition, and Immigration in Germany with Nicholé Velásquez and Pascale Espinosa

This immersive 3-hour workshop, led by artist Pascale Espinosa together with Nichole Velazquez from Team Instinct, explores the complex intersections of gender identity, transition experiences, loneliness, and immigration in the German context.

  • Introduction (30 minutes)Welcome and brief introductions
  • Overview of key themes: gender identity, transition, loneliness, and immigration
  • Personal Narratives (45 minutes)Pascale Espinosa shares insights from her artistic practice and personal experiences
  • Nichole Velazquez discusses Instinct’s work with diverse communities in Berlin
  • Interactive Session (60 minutes)Small group discussions on personal experiences and challenges
  • Creative exercises to explore identity through various mediums (writing, drawing, movement)
  • Collective Reflection (30 minutes)Group sharing of insights and creations

This workshop aims to create a safe, inclusive space for participants to explore their multifaceted identities, share experiences, and build connections. Through artistic expression and guided discussions, attendees will gain new perspectives on navigating the complexities of gender, transition, and immigration in contemporary German society.

Pascale Espinosa (Tomás) (they/them) is a multi-disciplinary artist. Their work investigates situations at the intersections of private and public spaces, exploring the histories of the place and the circumstances of possible encounters. In recent years, Espinosa also has been reflecting on the historical violence in their home country Colombia and the violence of being a non-binary person.

Because we believe that art and culture can be a powerful platform for change and self-development while enriching and diversifying existing cultural structures and art scenes through new, international queer inspiration.

In cooperation with the Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt (Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion), we are village | queer matters has set itself the goal to offer a programme of events throughout 2024 to enable queer migrant artists to find their footing on the Berlin art scene.
