Instinct #19 | Film screening

Curated and hosted by Pierre Emö

This screening features six short films that explore queer cruising as both refuge and rebellion, offering spaces for expression, recognition, and belonging. The films examine how cruising navigates public and digital spaces, aligning with our exhibition, “Cruising – Intergenerational Bridges and Labyrinthine Journeys” to highlight its cultural and political significance across generations.

Supersexual (Directed by Kosta Karakashyan, 2023, 6 minutes)
A young Bulgarian man, riding the endless rollercoaster of workouts, anonymous sex, and dopamine, asks how to finally get off in a world where the body is everything.
Piss Off X (Directed by Henry Baker, 2019, 20 minutes)
A documentary that explores a long-practiced erotic fetish from the point of view of a gay millennial who expresses it as performance art.
Pussy Cruising (Directed by Maša Zia Lenárdič & Anja Wutej)
What would cruising among lesbians look like? Cruising seems to be a normal part of the gay culture and we all know scenes from famous gay films where men cruise in parks or other public spaces. At the same time, cruising is barely practised among lesbians. Why? Pussy Cruising tackles this topic in a humorous way and takes you on a flirtatious journey between vibrant fantasy and mundane reality.
Trade Center (Directed by Adam Baran)
The voices of five gay men who cruised for sex at the World Trade Center in the 1980s and 1990s haunt the sanitized, commerce-driven landscape that is the newly rebuilt Freedom Tower campus. In the process they reveal the breadth of the underground subculture that flourished in the Twin Towers’ shadows, but remains excluded from the history books and the memorials. This mournful day-in-the-life documentary of the WTC today serves as a memorial to the unknown men who cruised there and a meditation on disaster capitalism that’s especially resonant in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ecstatic Unity (Directed by Gerard X Reyes & Poppy Sanchez, 2024, 18 minutes)
In summer, Berlin’s lakes become mystical places where people go to transcend their mundane lives. Jorge and Gerard set out on a ritualistic trip to one of these lakes. Enraptured by the natural surroundings and guided by their primal instincts, the bearded boys spin themselves into a whirlwind of blissful breath and tantric touch.
Islands (Directed by Yann Gonzalez, 2017, 23 minutes)
Characters wander through an erotic maze of love and desire.

About Instinct
Instinct.berlin is an arts organization that presents exhibitions with queer artists twice a year at the Village, a community center for queer people in Berlin. These exhibitions, along with performances and talks, encourage interaction between artists and the local community.

The residency program allows artists to engage intensively with the vibrant atmosphere of the Village and build a bridge between their work and the wider queer community. This collaboration enriches the cultural dialog and supports the development of queer art projects, benefiting both the artists and the community at large.
