Village Book Club – ““All Down Darkness Wide” // Seán Hewitt (2022)
Host: Marco Astolfi
A story of love, heartbreak and coming of age, “All Down Darkness Wide” is an unusual memoir, with a non-linear structure and a Gothic atmosphere.
When Seán meets Elias during a post-collage journey in Colombia, the two fall headlong into a love story. After their blissful first meeting, they settle down together in Sweden, but as Elias struggles with severe depression, the couple comes face to face with crisis.
Wrestling with this, Seán Hewitt delves deep into his own history, and plumbs the darkness in search of solace and hope, from a nineteenth-century cemetery in Liverpool to the pine forests of Gothenburg. “It’s complete a cliche to say I wrote the book I wish I had when I was younger, but I spent a long time looking for a book that would help in the situations in which this memoir finds itself”, says the author.
About the Village Book Club

Anticipating insightful discussions, we choose the next book two months in advance.
