Description
Village Book Club – “Detransition, Baby” by Torrey Peters (2021)
Host: Marco Astolfi
New York. Navigating the world as a trans woman was ultimately too difficult for Amy, so, after six years of that life, she decided to detransition and become Ames again. When Katrina, Ames’s current lover, discovers she is pregnant with his child, it comes as a shock. Ames thought to be sterile because of his hormone replacement therapy, and doubts that he can fulfil the masculine role of a father. He reconnects with Reese, his former trans lover – who had long wanted to mother a child of her own – believing that the three of them could raise the baby together. Ames, Reese and Katrina question their identities, their relationships with each other, and if they could form a stable, even if unconventional, family. The novel is written in the style of a soap opera. Peters said she wanted to portray trans people not as an embattled group but just as quotidian, boring, flawed people.
The discussion on the evening will be in English (with translation from and to German if necessary).

The Village Book Club started in September 2017 with a discussion on “The Velvet Rage”. Since then book lovers and bookworms have been meeting on a bimonthly basis, live and online, to discuss works of fiction and non-fiction (novels, biographies, and essays) focused on or related to GBTQ themes and personalities.
