Description

Book Reading & Discussion: “Queer Loneliness. Queer Community.”

with the author Lennart Herberhold

Loneliness is a personal experience, a private pain. At the same time, it has causes that are beyond your control. Aging, the loss of friends, digitalization, and the current shift to the right—these are reasons for being alone that particularly affect queer people. Why is it so hard for us to talk about it? Because loneliness is a taboo. “You failed to find a partner / good friends / a community. Your own fault!” says the voice in our head.

In his book “Queer Loneliness. Queer Community,” Lennart Herberhold takes you on a journey across Germany. And he shows that loneliness concerns us all—and that there are ways out of it, even if they are often not easy.

Lennart Herberhold, born in 1975 and raised in Saarland, works for the cultural programs of NDR television and frequently produces segments on queer topics, such as the documentary “Queer and Muslim.” In his first book, “Together!”, he explored communal living projects. “Queer Loneliness. Queer Community” has just been published by Quer Verlag Berlin.

Belonging versus loneliness: everybody can feel lonely sometimes
As human beings we have a natural longing for social connection and support by others. Due to individual and structural discrimination queer people have an ever higher risk to suffer from chronic loneliness.
In cooperation with the Landesstelle für Gleichbehandlung (Berlin State Office for the Equality of Treatment – against Discrimination) we are village | queer matters has set itself the goal to offer some programming on the issue of loneliness in the queer community.
We have also created a survey to find out more about your experiences of loneliness. With your help, we can create a better program that meets your needs and with which we can create more togetherness!
