CELEBRATION is a visually striking documentary that offers an unprecedented look behind the scenes at the legendary Yves Saint Laurent ’s fashion house during his final years. Filmed between 1998 and 2001, director Olivier Meyrou captures the intimate and often fraught relationship between Saint Laurent and his business partner Pierre Bergé. As Saint Laurent, already frail and withdrawn, sketches his last haute couture collection, Bergé orchestrates a series of grand celebrations to cement the designer’s legacy as a modern myth.
The film stands out for its aesthetic ambition: Meyrou’s camera lingers on glances, gestures, and fleeting moments, creating a mysterious and almost experimental portrait of a world in transition. Rather than following a conventional narrative, CELEBRATION immerses viewers in the rituals and tensions of the atelier, revealing both the glamour and the existential weight behind the façade of high fashion. The documentary was originally suppressed for over a decade by Bergé, making its eventual release a significant event for fashion and cinema alike.
