Dressed in Blue (Vestida de Azul)
Directed by Antonio Giménez-Rico
Spain, 1983 – 98 min
In Spanish with English subtitles

Dressed in Blue isn’t a conventional talking-head documentary. It shifts between intimate interviews and staged, scripted scenes performed by the women themselves, often alongside friends and family, giving the film the feel of lived experience recreated in real time. Beautifully shot by cinematographer Teo Escamilla, it captures both the hard edges and the glamour: the daily compromises, the public performance, the chosen family.

Description

Film Night - Dressed in Blue (Vestida de Azul)

Host: Thiago Santos Silva

One of the best trans films you’ve probably never heard of, Antonio Giménez-Rico’s landmark 1983 documentary Dressed in Blue (Vestida de Azul) follows six transgender women in Madrid in the years after Spain’s transition to democracy. Eva, Nacha, Loren, Josette, Reneé, and Tamara speak with candor and humor about love, work, family, and survival—living openly in a country that’s only just beginning to let them.

Long unseen outside Spain and difficult to find for decades, Dressed in Blue is a rare, essential record—one that still feels bracingly current.

Thiago watched way too many films alone in his room as a teenager. Now, as an adult (?), he gets to share them with other folks who most likely felt alienated from the world growing up as well.
He’s the current Volunteer Project Lead at we are village, runs ‘the club’ – a series of events and workshops for current and former clubbers who also long for a place to meet beyond the dancefloor – and supports other social initiatives around Berlin. If building and strenghtening community is a dear topic to you, then you can definitely use that as conversation starter with him.
